I used to have this old alim block in my backpack so the wires would be out. I stopped doing this when people thought I had a bomb in it :|

On another note the whole re-installing XP is a huge pain in the arse...what with re-installing all these programs on my new HD...methinks my next little cash outlay ought to be for a backup / restore system. Any recommendations?

Old parts go to Talon (mobo, cpu, and left over RAM), however I've been holding back...

TigerDirect sent me 2 cpu's, but only charged me for one! I could RMA the whole thing, but I don't want the hassle. It's not all hot fudge and ice cream sundaes though as the cpu does have a couple bent pins that someone would have to straighten out with some tweezers or whatnot.

Its an Athlon 64 3800 processor. If enough folks are interested we could do some sort of raffle (I think I like raffles because I'm terribly unimaginative)...if not, well then it'll go to the person that gives me 10 million credits in SWG

I'd like an answer to this too.

I'd be interested, but I'd need to get a new motherboard, and that'd mean new RAM, too, as I'm currrently running RDRAM. :( I'll have to spend some time looking to see what it would take to get a mobo to work with it and how much that would cost. How likely is the processor to work, even after the pins are straightened? How hard is it to straighten the pins?

Good pair of tweezers and you should be okay. The only hard part is being able to focus your eyes on the pins since they are so small...but if you have good eyes / magnifying glass...can be done. Cost / benefit of $375 bucks...which is what the cpu costs.

My mobo ran me $125...RAM well runs the gamut depending on what you want the A8V can run PC3200 400 Mhz...which can be a bit pricey, but if you use the 300 or 333 PC2700 that's a bit cheaper...a 512 MB stick costs anywhere from 45 -95 bucks on newegg.

EDIT: There's only like 3 pins or so that are bent....

Definitly have to watch out on this whole Bent Pin Fisaco.. I recently bought a chip from Newegg and it came in a crushed box and Newegg was gonna stick me without a replacement so I had to file a report with FEDEX and then Newegg wouldn't replace the chip only credit me minus the restocking fee.. so I asked for a manager who finally credited me back full.. I will NEVER buy a chip mail order again.. I will buy other components mail order but I will go to the local PC guys for the chip!

Don't, simply don't. Shell out the few extra bucks (yes, it's few) for the 400 MHz RAM and avoid having the RAM as a bottleneck, it's really something you want to keep up.

Oh, I'd never buy RAM that runs at less than 400 MHz. Hell, I bought RDRAM, simply because its performance was so far and away better than anything DDR had at the time. That was like 4 years ago, though. Maybe not quite.

I'm not worried about saving the money for the CPU, dbakke, but if it doesn't work, then I'd be out the cost of the mobo and the RAM. I don't suppose you could try to straighten the pins and test it in your mobo and make sure it works? If it does, I'd happily work out an arrangement with you, but I don't want to buy a bunch of stuff only to then not be able to use it 'cause I need to buy another processor that I didn't budget for.
