So I'm sitting here with my co-worker discussing Ep III which neither of us have seen, and it suddenly dawned on me that we've not seen one ounce of Bacta in either of the first two films. I'm wondering why.

Anybody have any history from the EU concerning bacta? I remember the Xwing series had a big deal about the Bacta trade that reminded me of the our real life Oil industries.

With the buzz about Ep III being Lucas's political statement, I was half expecting to hear that bacta was the central reason for the war against the wookies or something crazy like that.

How about this snippet of info:

During the Galactic Civil War, the Empire realized the importance of bacta and shut down all satellite manufacturing centers, allowing the bacta plants on Thyferra to have a total monopoly on production. Two manufacturers reigned supreme, the Zaltin and Xucphra corporations.

So it seems Bacta should have been around before the GCW and it does not have much connection to Kashyyk.

I am not an expert on the EU though, and Lucas has been known to disregard EU sources if they did not fit his "vision".

the above matches the info found in the X-wing books...It could be that it was developed slightly later in the timeline...we don't see bacta until Ep.5 at which point the empire is firmly established so i dunno

... thanks for the info. The above states that the Empire realized the importance of Bacta during the Galactic Civil War. If not mistaken, this is different from the Clone Wars, which is what we're seeing in Episode 2 and 3. The Galactic Civil War is fought in Eps 4,5, & 6. So we probably won't see any bacta in Ep 3. Oh well.

I know Bacta is used in the Clone Wars books. Depa Billaba is submerged in it at the end of Shatterpoint.

I don't see a reason why it won't be used in EP III is there is the right oportunity. That information above only indicates that nobody considered Bacta a Strategic Resource before the GCW. Which really doesn't mean anything since the Clone Wars is the first War the Republic has seen in thousands of years, and Bacta wasn't very important in the Clone Wars because clones don't stand around long enough to be put in Bacta.

I think the reason we haven't seen Bacta in the movies up to this point is simply because there was no need to show it.

Sith don’t use Bacta!

I am just pulling that out of thin air.... but think about it. The emperor wants Vader to fully convert to the dark side. What better way than to make his pain linger, and his hatred for the Jedi grow. Bacta may heal too fast, too painlessly. If you want to make Vader a bad ass you make anger and hate part of every second of his life. What better conduit for anger and hate than pain… full body burn type of pain.

I do think the suit and fast action was the only think that would keep him alive. So even if pain was not part of the equation, the suit was necessary…. But I bet the reason he went into the suit first instead of a bacta bath is because the emperor wants him suck in the dark side like a vacuum.
