This one looks very bad, and it is heading right at us. My school is cancled for monday, but Danyale's work has not cancled. So we cant evacuate. The roads are too backed up now anyway, if we left now we would be stuck in traffic as the hurricane passes. Hopefully it starts turning north so that Baton Rouge can be on the west side. If we are on the east we are in serious trouble.

Oh, say goodbye to New Orleans.

That traffic is going about 5 to 10 miles per hour! Most traffic is not allowed to head east or south of here. So the empty lanes are those heading south or east.

We do have something called Contra-Flow. In many places they have all lanes heading out, ie you can drive on the wrong side of the interstate, even south bound lanes have north bound traffic. However in the thick of Baton Rouge and New Orleans they can not do this because of the complexity of the interstate.

Yeah.... I heard them read it and I thought it was a hoax. I have never heard any news agency say anything so blunt. They just dont do that kind of thing down here. I looked for hours, and now I found the real press release. BTW the noaa website is crap when you are trying to find this kind of info.

Danyale is very scared. Her employer did not cancel until this evening, but by then it was just about too late to drive north. It would take us 5 or 6 hours to reach my parents house, a drive that would normally take is 1.5-2 hours. The rain is starting to hit us now, and the roads are still moving slow. It is not a good time to be on the road, especially for such a long trip.

If it gets bad we will drive to her old boss’s house. It is a sturdier house, and it is further north. But we will not go there unless Katrina comes right at us. They keep saying it will turn north, but they have been saying that for over 36 hours now. If it dose not turn north soon we will be in real trouble here in Baton Rouge.

My neighor from over there had all her relatives arrive just a short while ago, all 18 of them! We loaned them a couple of our be ds from our sparebedrooms to house them. They left late last evening and arrived today. They loaded everything of importance that really mattered to them .. pets, family pictures, etc .. From the looks of things this could be quite bad. Hope everything goes well with you.

That map shows where Baton Rouge is in relation to New Orleans. I guess there is about 70-80 miles between the two cities or about 1 hour in normal traffic.

Just about all the clear channel radio stations from here to Mobile MS are playing this live feed

Up until the last hour, weather here in my corner of Baton Rouge has been rainy but uneventful. The towns farther east were hit much harder. Then the towns east of those approaching the Louisiana Mississippi border are really bad off.

In the last hour the winds here where I live have been getting much worse. We are on the far west side of the storm, far away from the eye, but the bands that spin off of the eye are starting to travel right through our area and they are packing some serious wind. I did not loose power yet people in the towns around me have lost power.

I see wind damaged houses around me, and there are tree limbs all over the place. So far the damage is just comedic, I have some vinyl siding that has come loose. The weird thing is all this wind and damage has happened over the last hour… I would have expected much worse this morning, and much less this afternoon.

googles home page has a link to direct updates on Katrina. I'm sure they have done this before but I haven't seen them do updates like this as yet.

Man, forget about making phone calls, all lines are acting screwy at best. I guess it is the volume but if you can even get a dial tone your calls end with fast busy signals, or number disconnected messages.

Danyale's employer has an emergency phone number to call for work information. She could not get through to that number or anyone else. She started trying at 3PM and eventually gave us when we went to bed. She woke up at 3AM and got through to find out she does not have to be at work. However I got up at 6AM and discovered that the phones are dead again.

It is nothing but an inconvenience for us, but I bet it is maddening for those who suffered more damage. In the information age, lack of communication can drive a man crazy. This phone crap makes me want to resurrect an old idea I had for a small family website/forum. Weird how I can communicate to people in Germany, Ireland, Greenland etc, but not my parents stuck in Gulf Shores AL or my classmates here in town.

Yeah,

Phone lines have a priority assigned to them - when someone with a higher priority tries to use the line and there are none available, it'll randomly disconnect someone with lower priority. When thousands of highers try to use it, you've seen what happens.

I just got an email from a client of mine down in AL, who we were financing a new home loan for. The email said that she was supposed to be out of her old house on the 6th (next week), and she was going to move into an apartment between then, and the time she found a new house to buy.

The apartment complex that she was moving to is no longer in existence. So there goes that idea.

As a first test for how well the new politics/religion board will work, I've split all comments after this point to a new post in The Forum.

The Forum is in a test phase, and will be re-evaluated on whether it should live or die in a few weeks. The rules are:

Over the past two weeks I have seen amazing things here in Baton Rouge. My city is pretty much the headquarters of the relief effort for the Louisiana side of things. So it is a kind of hub/launching pad as people come from all over the country to help.

It is calming down now, but over the last few weeks the amount of air traffic over Baton Rouge has been unbelievable. It is as if we are on the front lines of some kind of assault. The helicopter presence has been mind boggling. In the early days of the past two weeks, I saw many blackhawk, and chinook helicopters land on LSU's track and field facility. The Basketball arena adjacent to the track and field complex was turned into a hospital of sorts so I imaging the helicopters was bringing patients in for treatment. In addition, the coast guard has some kind of massive, sleek looking helicopter that lands there too…. It is a real beauty. The airport between where I live and Baton Rouge is full of helicopters unlike ever before.

As I was leaving campus one day I saw a convoy of 20-30 fire trucks from California, then another day I saw probably 40 ambulances from Arkansas. There were a mix of emergency vehicles from Chicago and other places that I assumed were neighbors of Chicago in a convoy that seemed to go on and on and on.

The national guard is both deployed in my city, as well as passing through as they move in on New Orleans. Many of the Guardsmen that are stationed in Baton Rouge are from other states, and despite being plucked from their homes, they have been amazingly friendly.

To those who have helped out across the country, and across the world, I can honestly say I am witnessing amazing signs of that help on a daily basis.

thanks for those words Cyrus. In all of this I think I and maybe even we all had forgotten that at the end of the day it was Americans that steped up to help other Americans.

I know the convoy that left from Chicago left a maybe week ago. They get no extra pay, they only get to go and do what it is they do. They help others when they are needed. I think in my blame for who could have done what and when I missed the fact that people are doing something. Many of whom are doing it becuase then can, not becuase they have to.

I forwarded your post on to another group I am apart of as I think you hit the point spot on.

A local radio station in my home city (Edmonton) put together a drive for listeners to gather teddy bears/ other stuffed animals , bring them to the station, where they were loaded on to moving trucks and personally driven down to Houston to give to children refuges.

I thought it was a touching sentiment and although, yes, maybe food/supplies are needed more, but when its kids giving up their personal loved toys to give to other children, I think its quite remarkable.

I'm not sure exactly how many trucks they filled but I do know it was craziness with people phoning in. I recall hearing one family was bringing a motorhome full of stuff in from their town a good 6 hours away.
