Pleeeeease explain cricket to me. I WANT to understand.

Seriously, I get most of the basics, it's just the scoring I don't get. Most specifically how do they decide to end the game, and how do they trade off not giving the batters a chance to hit the ball versus not getting them out.

Cricket is very simple.

England invent game.
England continue lose very badly to countries they used to own.
In a very rare once in a while, England might just win one of those games they invent.
On those rare once in a whiles, it is the most-super-best-duper-thing-to-happen-in-the-world.... ever. And they never let you hear the end of it, especially when they keep losing.

Scoring a run is when the batsman hits the ball (and is not caught out) and the two batsmen run to the opposing side of the "square" (don't ask me why it's called that!). If a batsman hits the ball and it reaches the boundary (the rope around the edge) it scores 4 runs. If it crosses the boundary without hitting the ground in between, it scores 6 runs.

An innings ends when the entire batting team is out (well with the exception of one batsman) or they declare. the opposing team then goes into bat. In a one-day series, an innings has a limited number of overs to be bowled and once they have been the innings is over. For a test match the series last five days and is then concluded regardless of result. Also each day in a test match has a set number of overs to be bowled at which point the day is concluded.

In a test match, the team with the most runs after two innings in bat, wins the game. If the 5 days are up, with neither side winning, the game is drawn. There is no drawn games in one day matches.

As far as strategy goes. In a test match, you aim to get a reasonable score each innings. Unless weather stops plays, a test is unlikely to be drawn. If you're winning the series but losing the match, players try to draw out the batting to draw the game so that the series standing is not affected. In a one day match (50 over innings, one innings per team) or a 20:20 match (as per one day, but with only 20 overs) you aim to get as many runs as possible and it usually makes very exciting cricket.


That's the broad idea of the scoring, I can give more specifics if you like.


Oh, and an over is 6 balls (assuming no no balls are bowled)
