That's a bunch of horse apples. After dealing with SOE's incompetance in multiple games, I didn't think they could lose much more respect. (I do own a Sony bigscreen TV though so call me a hypocrite ). So the gist of this is, you buy one of their "copy protected CDs" which come with their own proprietary player. It installs software on your computer, without you being aware or with your permission. That right there is enough to get me pissed. It's MY computer, MY property, and they have no right to install it as it's not in the EULA. Knowing what they are doing is shady at best, Sony's hired content protection hacks devised a way to hide the software completely from you. You won't see it instaled, in your start menu, in your Add/Remove programs, in your running processes from the Task Manager, or in the Registry, unless you employ software that was designed to uncovered the WORST of malware/spyware. And the code for their protection software is written so sloppily, it's running extra routines on it's scan taking up processor time and memory on your machine in turn slowing everything down. It may as well be malware.... pathetic.

Furthermore, it completely takes over your optical drives. If you delete the malware, your optical drives will not work. Period. You have to go back through and manually alter all your registry info for your drive to work. It fouls some other stuff up too.

This I've not been able to confirm or anything, and I'm not quite techy enough to know, but I've been told it also is a security risk and opens up your PC to more attacks by similar malware. It uses some unpleasant plug-and-play vulnerability.

You should be mad because we say so. We're your technical advisors, and we say it should piss the hell out of you. If you want an explanation of why, my hourly rate is $188.

You're selling yourself short! People at BestBuy charge $60 to install a video card that takes 10 minutes to install. So by that math, $360/hour sounds about kosher.

Feel the anger!

Funny enough, my company set up all the contracts for the guys at BestBuy... does their HR and finances and advises them on their rates. But, good point.

For Manti, my rates are now $360/hr.

Yeah, but what's the Avian rate? 188/hr again?

Depends on the service provided. :) "Game development stuff" is pro-bono, "inciting techno-revolts against software made by huge media companies to destroy your computer if it thinks you are pirating music" is still $360.

I would love to see Blizzard sue Sony over this. I'd laugh until I threw up.

Class action lawsuit coming against Sony. There is on in California, and one in Italy. Sony may take some big heat over this one.

Here's some more crap Sony is pulling:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=27568

If this is true, I'll avoid the PS3 like the plague, and will purchase the inferior 360. I've just about had it with Sony's shit.

Sony's processing power blows it away. The PS3's RAM is faster, the Cell chip absolutely crushes the 360's dual core, and all Sony games will be mandated to output at a minimum of 1080p resolution. They'll also support 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i. The 360 will do all of that, but will not support 1080p.

Sony also has support for two monitors at 1080p. The 360 will only do one output. Plus, in my opinion, Sony has a much better game lineup.

Sony just never knows when to quit. Their "uninstall" software for the rootkit opens up the biggest security hole ever known to Windows, allowing any webpage to run any code, anytime, without user permission.

There needs to be some serious hell to pay for this.

Who do you work for, and how did it come up?

And Azz:

Sony release some software on their music CDs that when put in an optical drive with auto-run enabled (most PCs in the world) and with admin rights (even more PCs in the world) it installs a rootkit on the system as well as some other software. It does this without letting the user know it has been done, and it does it automatically as soon as the CD is put in the drive.

A rootkit is just a piece of software that hides itself on your system. You can't see it when you view all the running processes on your system utilizing task manager. This rootkit also hides the other software.

The other software prevents you from playing that particular CD with any other software except the Sony provided software. It also prevents ripping of the CD. The rootkit will also hide any running processes that begin with the marking "$sys$". This means anyone can make a virus or trojan that starts with those characters, and it will be hidden. Anti-virus programs won't be able to detect it.

All this was found out, and people rightly got very irritated at Sony. So Sony released a "patch" with the newest version of the software, and also made the software and the rootkit "visible" in the processes, but doesn't remove it. If you try to remove the software yourself, it will make your CD and DVD drives inoperable. They won't read any discs at all.

If you pester them and call them a bunch, they will eventually give you a tool to uninstall this malware, and I believe the tool has now been made available to anyone who goes to the site. The tool consists of downloading an ActiveX control for Internet Explorer. ActiveX stuff can do a lot of really neat things and make your webpages amazingly cool, but it also opens the door for security problems, and as a result most people in the know disable a lot of ActiveX stuff.

Anyway, to remove Sony's software and rootkit, you have to download this ActiveX control software. This software was so poorly written that once on your machine, it will allow any website you go to to run any code it wants on your machine. In short, anyone can put up any virus or malicious code on a website and if you go there, that software will automatically be downloaded and ran on your machine, without you knowing it. Its a completely wide-open door to your system, as long as the writer has it access Sony's ActiveX control.

So now to help prevent your machine from being vulnerable due to Sony's incompetence, you have to make your machine more vulnerable.

Its a huge problem for Sony, and there are likely to be many and numerous lawsuits against them for it. There my also be criminal suits against them as well.

The very best part of all of this, is that the software vendor who wrote the program for Sony actually broke copyright law with the software, and ripped parts of it off. So they have copyright violating software that opens up your PC to all kinds of security risks to prevent you from violating their copyright.

I'm with a small investment bank. The prospective client's software dealt partially with Digital Rights Management issues.

God bless Sony and their making of all the world's PCs vulnerable to attack by all kinds of crap.

http://www.doxpara.com/?q=sony

Its a nice little security blog from the guy who tracked the DRM's phone home calls back to Sony's servers through DNS servers. Over half a million servers are guaranteed to have had the DRM phone home through them, and quite possibly more than double that. As each DNS server serves lots and lots and lots of PCs, its quite forseeable that there are millions of infected PCs there.

In a huge bit of funnyness, its turning out that there are lots of infected PCs on corporate networks too. People bring in CDs to listen to music at work. D'oh! You can bet there are some majorly pissed off people in the IT world too.

I hope and pray that every major corporation and government in the world sues the ever-loving hell out of Sony, and breaks the company apart.

Cool! And when SOE has to sell off SWG, we can buy it with the proceeds of the Google ads and pitch in to make it the game it *should* have been! Rise, AvianSWG!

I'd missed this somewhere along the line:
http://www.mp3newswire.net/stories/5002/admonish.html

Quote:
Sony knew they were dead in the water when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) admonished them on the CD rootkit scandal - at a Chamber of Commerce event on combating intellectual-property theft. According to Briand Krebs of the Washington Post the Department of Homeland Security's assistant secretary for policy, Stewart Baker, made at the event "a remark clearly aimed directly at Sony and other labels":

"It's very important to remember that it's your intellectual property -- it's not your computer. And in the pursuit of protection of intellectual property, it's important not to defeat or undermine the security measures that people need to adopt in these days.

God Bless Texas!
http://www.kwtx.com/news/headlines/1996172.html

From dslreports.com: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/69696
Quote:
The state of Texas has filed suit against Sony/BMG for their disaster that was DRM, claiming "Sony has engaged in a technological version of cloak and dagger deceit against consumers by hiding secret files on their computers." The state is looking for civil penalties of $100,000 per violation of the state's Consumer Protection Against Computer Spyware Act, enacted earlier this year.

EDIT:
Here's an AP story on it:
http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/11/21/D8E11IK00.html
