This game looks to be amazing. It looks to finally be a complex "world" game bringing in a deep mix of social, combat, crafting, and rp elements into a game. The people developing it are a privately funded group, not a corp like SOE. It has no monthly fees to play after you purchase the software. They will be implementing a mechanism to exchange real world money for ingame money. I actually don't have a problem with that since it's free monthly, and you're helping them with future development costs, and not paying someone on eBay. Check it out. www.roma-victor.com

Holy crap. I'm impressed. I will be buying this one on launch day. I'm all about no monthly fee. Stupid monthly fees.

My immediate goals in this game will be to create a bustling stop along a well traveled road. A rest stop for campaigning legions. The world is MASSIVE and will take time to journey, so these stops I see will be important. I want to build a restaurant/bar/inn first, later add a bath house, and a barracks for me slave guards. Farms will be next and barns for live stock. You can capture NPC's from other cities, and barbarians and make them your slave. Slaves will work in your buildings, protect them while you're gone, and so forth. Hopefully this little mecca will turn into a village. The building construction tradeskill is insane, and will allow awesome city construction. With the money->game conversion, I plan on dropping some change for a good sized slave group to get me started in all my endeavours. From there, it's back to my favorite RPG role... the Politician :)

BTW, the screen shots they have are old ones from the beta, using the skeleton graphics engine. They have stated that they know the graphics suck and had not implemented the new engine at the time those were taken.

Reminds me a little of "A Tale in the Desert"

I was wondering about that.

Hey Yak... do we have Avian sig graphics around here someplace? something to put in our signatures on other forums (like the one for this game?)

As a fan of Rome on HBO, this is good timing!!! I can be Vorenus for the next year while I wait for season 2 :)

Would be nice to know if they'll meet their "Autumn" release date, or if we should hibernate for the winter.

These look good to me.

Quote:
* No levelling treadmill

There are no character levels in Roma Victor. None. Instead there's the huge, diverse skill tree that we've already mentioned. There are no level-based restrictions by design or consequence like you'll find in most MMORPG's. You won't be forced to find people of a similar level in order to play in a group and you won't be restricted to certain types of encounter. Of course this also means that you won't be trying to catch up with friends that have played more than you (and therefore 'levelled' faster), or indeed trying to slow your own development and/or 'level up' your friends so that they can come and hunt with you again. Character development in Roma Victor is much more like real life.

Quote:
* No camping

There are no fixed regular spawns, no uber loot drops and no reasons to find yourself having to sit at a certain location waiting for hours on end for your group's turn to kill something and loot it. The world is dynamic and varied and NPC's have their own 'lives'. If you run into some bandits on the road between Eboracum and Londinium then that's because those bandits are 'working the road' and they'll be doing so until killed, captured (and usually sold) or chased off. If a group of barbarians should find themselves at a Roman villa, are confident that there isn't sufficient Roman support nearby and raze the villa to the ground, taking what loot they can, then that villa has been razed. Someone (NPC or player) would have to repair the ruin, renovate and reoccupy it before they'd be able to consider raiding it again.

The whole journey through Elysian Fields when you die sounds very interesting. The difficulty of leaving the afterlife and returning to your body depends on how virtuous you lived your life

WOW.. look at this:

Hair grows when you're not online and you'll have to get it cut if you want to keep it short. Like most things, with the right tool and the right skill someone can perform an essential service for the community.

Unfortunately due to technical limitations, hair length will only be visible in certain steps or stages but if you let your character go ungroomed then it might end up pretty hairy - depending on your character's ethnic origins.

Female characters have less problems than males in this respect - they don't grow beards and women with long hair are socially acceptable throughout the 'known' world. I guess that's part of the trade-off for having some slight physical limitations during character creation. There are interesting parallels with real life here, which I don't really want to touch with a barge pole. But when we're recreating the competitive and social dynamics of the world as close to historical circumstances as we can, we can't avoid bumping into a few.

Anyway along with dirt, hair growth is actually a surprisingly substantial part of existence in 180A.D. When was the last time you had your hair cut?

-KFR

P.S. If you're offline for a month, you've been away for quite a while and you'll certainly want to at least freshen up.

Yes, been keeping an eye on this for a while now. Seems almost too good to be true. I wonder if this little company can pull it off.

If they don't make graphics a priority, it will get easier (I hope)

That's a catch-22. If they don't, the game will lose a lot of it's appeal, but then maybe I'm just shallow :P

You may be shallow but you also have a good point. People coming from WOW, for example, are going to have high expectations.

Just read how you can only have one character per account. This is hardcore folks.

There's a number of Chilastran's from SWG grouping up over there under the name Legio XXVI Astrum Veteranum. It's under the role play section. I'm not sure how well this collection of people will ultimately work out, having not much more in common than playing on the same SWG server. But it's worth a shot. I want to play this game primarily RP.

For gaming, I'll take function and depth over beautiful graphics (though there are limits to how low you will go).

I realize that stance be unpopular with most gamers.

The complexity and depth of this game is not going to be for "all gamers". I predict that this game will have a much different audience, in the long run atleast. Certainly, the bulk of the WoW subscription base would not enjoy this game. I just hope it works well and is out soon. I don't think I could play another D&D fantasy type game for awhile.

On another note, I see Talon making his mark on the forums lol. It won't be long until he's founding and ruling the city of Libertaria.

Now this is funny....

Quote:
Wanted List
Any player character that kills a member of your guild (including NPC's hired by your guild) will be placed upon your guild's Wanted List. NPC's hired by your guild will be extremely aggressive towards characters on its Wanted List. Also characters on your guild's Wanted List will be highlighted as such when inspected by player members of your guild. Characters remain on your Wanted List until killed by one of your guild or manually removed by someone belonging to one of the top two ranks within that guild.

Note that players can be placed on their own guild's Wanted List and if they are killed by a member of their own guild, their killer does not then become wanted.

Wow...VERY Roman! I'll definitely continue to follow this game and appreciate any links to new information!

These are the fruits of a dev team that has a logical though process, listens to its fans, and has no abortion of a licensing agreement with a washed up director.

I applied as well.

If we end up with enough members in the BETA I will see what we can do about getting a private forum set up for us to talk about the BETA.

awww shucks. I wish they would all do like blizzard and do away with the NDA as soon as beta began. That was the coolest and biggest reason I ended up playing WoW. I had almost no interest in WoW until beta info started to hit the net.

For people like us who watch games as they are developed, the beta info is great advertisement and interest generator. I much rather hear what a player has to say about a game than a magazine or a company suit.

Good luck to you guys that applied for this beta.

Talon,

Make sure you look at the Guild Tools as soon as you get in. Once I am in that is something I want to check out. Looks awesome in the docs.
