yes you can be just a transporter. or just a miner, pirate, missions or even a trader (which is kind of a transporter). The thing to remember is that pvp is always on. So as you go deeper and deeper into space the more hazzards you will run into or need to avoid.

With carefull planning however you can build a pretty interesting defensive system. There are Jammers, EMPs, warp drive disablers etc. So if you get attacked instead of attacking you can throw up your defenses and 'cut and run'. Very Firefly really.

I'm starting to look into this as well as it holds some interest for me. Look at the Trader skills and the Industry skills. Then look at the array of available Electronic warfare devices and skills.

Im leaning toward being a pirate/smuggler but not sure just yet. What is cool is there is contraband, slaves and goods that all need to be moved. most are illegal in one or more systems. Sell them there and (haven't looked into it but) I would think you could make quite a profit. The Local Goverments does run scans and will fire on you or at least (actually) board you and take your illicit goods.

The game is very very open. Basically imagine Kostners game theory of player made content in an environment where it is allow to thrive.

One thing to note. You can make player delivery missions and such but most are money scams. Im sure there are corporations out there that do what it is you are looking to do. Join up with them as a transporter and life could be fun. They will even give you a full player run fleet of ships to escort you if the cargo is valuable enough.

Im just scratching the surface of this game. To be honest the time barrier of entry is great. If you (I) can fight past that point I think the game is limitless.

It is a solid game, well developed, very well maintained and has a very active and very hardcore player base. This is not you average MMO.

If you ask any longtime player what their favorite feature is most will answer that they like that it has a large barrier of entry. 'Keeps the noobs out'. Second thing they will say is 'no other game rewards you for your time like Eve'. Ive heard that last one over and over again.

You can totally do that if
1) u have good sheilds etc...
2) you have friends to protect you

Most of the time good afterburners+sheilds will allow you to escape most confrontations as well as good sensors. While mining pirates may sometime enter the area...thats it higher security zones...when you get in the 0.0's and such where PvP is possible your a sitting duck without some firepower to back you up...Im not sure how much of a sitting duck as i've never tried it.

In terms of end game im not sure how fun being a transporter is..being a crafter type probably would be very valuable to large corps that need ships though.

Many of the endgame larger ships are only player craftable. So crafting ships is (I assume) a good skill set to have as it takes time to develop and time to build things. If you where a highly skilled crafter Im sure you could do well with a Corp.

sent :)

I made that pretty quick. I found that if you just jump ot random astroid fields and kill the pirates you get nice bounties and sell the loot (after reprocess) and you can make quick bank. Much much faster that doing lvl 1 missions.

I have 3 basic missle launchers and lvl 1 missles and take out the pirate with 2 missles each. Very easy kills. With an AB I can gather the loot quick too. Can't wait for the next patch (next week sometime) they are adding loot drones :)

woo hoo. Thanks. Now how did you do that so I can pay you back? :P

I've now go my Iteron MkII Gallente Industrial. Slow but loads of cargo space.

I mostly mine in 1.0 space atm, as when I go to lower security space there are always little red blips there and I tend to run like hell from them. :)

i think down to .5 is still only PVE space but typically better mining then 1.0 ...might want to check that out

Add me to your buddy list, right click, send ISK.

And yep in .5-1.0 space just stay 15-25k away from pirates and they will not even look at you. If they do start firing at you you can warp out to the next field with litle trouble.

remember the whole game is pvp but in .5-1.0 space if you are attacked the feds will come to your immediate aid.

yeah, yeah, yeah... I know all that. Just every time I go to a lower level space asteroid field, they lock onto me within a few seconds. And I'm too lazy to jump in from further out. :)

Besides, this Industrial is slooow and only has a mining laser equiped.... that's my excuse!
I guess I'm going to have to go investigate better shields and the like.

Just refunded you your 600k.

I went down to 0.6 and 0.5 space to have a look at the asteroid fields. I must have some massive sign on the side of my ship saying "Target Me!!", because I was 100km away from the priates and they started to lock on to me and come after me.

Anyway, there is doesn't seem to be anything out there worth my time mining atm, as I seem to be getting a good deal on Scordite in 1.0 (in the Genesis Region).

Oh, I spotted LazyAmy in game today. It seems TCO have a Corp with 19 members.

wow LazyAmy. Crazy.

I found a few Ice Fields out where I am if you are looking for them. I should be on later tonight if you want someone to guard you while you mine. I could use the bounties and loot they drop.

If you have a laser turret, where you put a crystal in it... does the crystal eventually get used up, like ammo in the gatling turrets?

the cool thing about this game is that there is no grind. So if you are busy, like I am, I just remember to set my training and when I have time to play I have already advanced a bunch. No grind :)

So if you are thinking about playing, get a free trail, spend 14 days training stuff and if you choose to play you have 14 days already trained, which is a lot for a basic player. Just remember to select your schools carefully. Ive still found the best way is to take everything that give you Frigate skills for free. Getting class IV frigate out of the game saves you massive time down the road.

Hey obo not sure if your aware of this but there are better mining specific ships then the tub ur in...best way to mine is get a ship with 2-3 lasers and maybe a missle launcher with 2 lasers you mine much faster plus the ships give bonuses...place minerals into a jet'd can (lasts 60minutes without poofing) and then switch ships and grab the tub to come back pick it all up (at least like 1 1/2 to 2 loads and refine/sell it loses wieght when u refine so good idea to grab 2 loads... best is when u get 2-3 miners mining and then you get a tubber to do cargo runs...maximizes profit

It's a matter of available money atm. When I did the trial a few months ago, I didn't finish the first storyline missions so I never got this implant everyone seems to get (to sell), and I ignored the agent so she won't talk to me now. So I started out with very, very little. I'm only now getting up to speed to be able to do anything decent.

buy missles, open cargo hold while in dock. Drag missles onto launcher. When in combat, just click onthe launcher and it will fire at your selected target.

I have that... but I get an error when trying to fire... I've tried to find a min or max range, but I can't seem to find one.

missles have no min range. But the max is velocity * flight time.

There is only one server other than test servers. Try again later. It may just be that the starter areas are full atm. Sure they just passed the 19k concurrent user mark on the weekend, so the 7k-odd on now wouldn't be a problem.

It opened up another 1500 slots after I gave it a few minutes. There's over 10k people on now. I'm in as Tetran. I'm going through the tutorial now. Got past the pirates and now onto mining. Unfortunately theres not enough time in the day, so off to bed for now. This looks really cool so far!

Red Moon Rising, the new 'expansion' (free to everyone) is being pushed out today, so it will be done for about a day for the update.
For those who just started, you might think of trying again after this goes live, as there will be new bloodlines to chose from and the turorial is being updated.

yeah RMR has some sweet stuff in it. EyE for and Eye and Flagged Canister Theft are very cool. Tractor Beams are also nice and will help miners and looters gather their canisters faster.

Many of the changes/additions I am far to n00b to understand but with 32 new ships, a dozen new skills and new areas to control it seems the game just got better.

call me jaded, but good customer service, customer care still seems above and beyond to me.

I got this email from CCP today. I've said it before 'It's the little things'.

Quote:
As a new player to EVE Online, you may not be up to date with the latest
news and forum headlines. Because of this, we wanted to inform you directly
that CCP Games is releasing the new version of EVE Online this evening at
10PM GMT.

New expansions result in extended server downtime that lasts for up to 24
hours. This is normal for a game of this size and magnitude. We therefore
recommend that you begin training a skill on your character that will take
longer than 24 hours to complete.

When the server updates are completed, the client will automatically
upgrade to the newest version of EVE Online: Red Moon Rising after you log
in. You may optionally download the version directly from our website at
http://www.eve-online.com/download/.

We sincerely appreciate your patience,

The CCP Team

Hmmm.... So what's y'alls honest opinion? Is EVE worth spending time getting into?

How well would it do on a slightly aged (1.8mhz/512mb) machine?
