I'm in and am on as Big Yak.
1) What's the difference between Rank and Level?
For example, I'm "Caldar Frigate Rank (2)", and Level 4. It looks like there's 5 levels... after I train to that, am I Rank 3?
Not sure. I do know that there are only 5 lvls per skill. There are usually advanced skills you can only get

2) What doing the skills really help with, and is there a good central list of what they do? I've searched through some of the help stuff, but nothing too useful found yet. Is going Frigate and Command the best for beginning?
If you left click on any skill of click the "i" button next to an item or skill on the market it will tell you what it does.
Also, if you click on "i" button on the market for say a Cruiser or Heavy Missle and then click Req Skills it will detail all the skills and subskills you need before you can use that item.
As far as what to train. Not really sure. Moge is a miner so for now he is training Learning IV, Instant Recall III and Anylitical mind III. Most of the primary mining skills are in the Industry tree and the primary stats for Industry ar Memory and Intelligence. See below or
click herefor now I would just train basic skills for your core profession as well as Learning IV and the 2 or 3 primary attribute for your core profession. Doing this will greatly decrease your training time on those skills. This should take several days (don't forget to set something long to train over night - even if your not sure you need it. No since wiasting the time). By then you will have a greater uderstanding of the game and will know what to train next. Example: Mining Drones or Industrial Ships or Secure Containers.

3) I'd really like to go science/engineering... but I would think starting this late in the game would not be worth it. I'm sure there's people so far beyond me that I'll never be on the forefront of building/designing new stuff.
Cant think like that. This game has tons of new people every day. Also, players playing for years are far out into Allaince space and probably work only for their Corp. Ships get blown up every day and need replacing. Someone better may be 10-20 jumps away while your may be only 2-3, where would you shop?

4) On the tutorial... You're right, it's the best game tutoral I've ever seen. Very nice. I started on toon, and went 90% through it (to the part talking about the guilds). Then, I rolled a new character... is there a way to skip just to that part in the tutorial? Or, do I have to do the entire tutorial over?
Not sure. Join the Rookie Help channel or post on the boards.

5) Suggestions on what to do first once I get out? It's a huge universe... where sohould I go? Where are you guys hanging out?
start with the Storyline quests. Given during the tutorial. Then just do random missions for money or mine. Every 16 mission I think you get a new storyline mission. Im told the storyline missions give good rewards.
Since most of us are difference races it may be a bit before most group up. But add us to your buddy liist and we can all chat while ingame.
