Hiya all, I'm about to get started with WOW very soon. I need to upgrade the computer first which should take about a week or so, then, after that I'm jumping in to WOW. My son, 10, will also play. He's been wanting to get into some online games and I though I could guide him through on his adventures :)

My question - getting started :D I'm sure most of you have some favorite WOW sites that you visit. Would you mind posting some of your favorites here? I don't know much about WOW except that it sounds fun. I don't know much about getting started, but, I want to read up on how the game works a bit before I just dive in. Anyhow -- any good "getting started" sites, or, just good general sites?

Also, what server do yall play on?

Nas! cool to hear you're jumpin on. My son just turned 4, but I so want him to be able to play a game with me.

The two servers for Avian are :

Dalaron - for Alliance and PvE
Maelstrom - for Horde and RP-PvP

You'll find many more Avians on Dalaron, but it's usually easier to get on Maelstrom. See ya around!

Is there a guild or something to join on Dalaron? Are Avian members associated with any others? I'm not even sure how it all works now. I'm just now reading up on it so I'll be able to ask better questions later. I have a friend and his wife who play on Suramar, but, I think I'd reather get on Dalaron if there are lots of Avians and a guild exists already. I may have lots of questions in the next few weeks :) hehe

Nas, use the My Characters options here on the forum and make a WoW character.

That will get you set up for access to the WoW Private forums here.

Been doing some reading. I'm thinking about going as a Mage. Do you know of any drawbacks for anything with that? In Everquest I started as a, um, human hunter I think, and grew to really dislike that because it was a "good at all things but great at nothing" character. A Druid however was a great solo character in EQ. Not trying to relate the two games, but .. heard anything bad about the Mage? Any suggestions? I think I'll probably be doing lots of soloing because of the odd times I will play .. so, I though Mages could pack a pretty good punch. Or, maybe a Warrior? But, I like blasting things with spells :) So, Mage or Warrior .. what do ya think?

I've gotten to play both the mage and warrior, and i'd say they both seem to do well once you learn how to use them. The warrior actually has issues with damage in my opinion, but works well with a healer at his side. I've had success with the mage when i'm able to slow down or incapacitate what's coming at me...also can do decent damge in a group with the mage.

Both are respectable classes in my opinion. Just depends what role you want to play...

It's all about what you want to do : a mage main role in a group is to do damage, and more specifically to AE. He also has to be teh water bitch. From all the mages I know this is a very fun class, so yeah I think you should give it a try ! If you want some readings about the game, the official website is full of websites that will provide you some very interesting content !

I think in the early game a Warrior has more survivability. He can ware better armor and has more hit points so in the early days when you pull more than one mob, the warrior has the potential to survive unfair fights. That changes later on when the mage has more crowd control abilities at his disposal, and hard hitting spells.

I have heard that Warriors get kind of boring in the middle game but really come in to their own in the end game. I am not sure if that is true, or if that is any different from all the other classes.

My main has been a priest for the past year. My hoard alts are Mage and Warrior and they are so much fun to play. As a holy priest I get used to my particular play style: save mana for healing others… keep eyes trained on the party frame… heal as needed. So when I get the chance to play the other classes it is so much fun.

One of the great things about WoW is how each class designed and played so differently. Warriors have rage which acts differently from a mages mana pool. Likewise a Rogue’s combo points and energy behave differently too. Factor in the different abilities, talent choices, and equip-able items and you will find that the classes are very different from each other, thus it is very fun to play more than one.

I have played both the mage and warrior up to about lvl 20. I agree with much of what has been said so far. Warriors are a ton of fun if you are used to playing a cloth armor player but blasting things as a mage is really fun.

Both are very welcome in any group so that is not a concern. I'd start with a Mage and blast away. around 10-20 you start dieing a lot - much like my rogue. But once you get into the 20's mages start to really unleash their power. Solo'ing with either is possible.

In the early lvls mages are quite fun as you usually blast the mob dead before it even reaches you. To appreciate the power and armor of a warrior I would start with a cloth/leather toon and once you get some gold built up make a warrior alt and twink the hell out of him - which can be very fun.

I would like to add that the feeling about a class becomes stable only after level 40.

Thanks for all the comments all. I just bought the game today. I'm going to attempt an install on my "old" system to see how well it works. Last time I upgraded was when SWG came out, then, a year later I got a better video card. So, we'll see. I played other RPG as warrior types mainly, so, this go around I'm gonna start as a Mage and see how it goes. I think I'll like it. Like I say, I'm doing lots of reading, and .. man, there seems to be SO MUCH to WOW. My head is about to explode right :)
